Fragrance Ranking
Perfume is by far the most expensive of all scents. The reason behind the cost is the amount of actual scent in perfume. Perfume contains 20% to 30% actual scent depending on the design house. Dilution rate is anywhere from 70% to 80% for perfume. Perfume is diluted with alcohol or water. The French word Eau translated into English means water. When you see the term Eau De Parfume it is fragrance diluted with water. Undiluted perfume can be caustic, causing skin irritation because of the chemicals used in making a scent, which is why it is diluted. Perfume is used sparingly because of the high percentage of fragrance, a drop behind the ear, the crux of the elbow, the wrist, and behind the knee. A little goes a long way. Cologne is the next most expensive scent, containing 15% to 20% pure fragrance, diluted 80% to 85% with water or alcohol. Percentages are dependent on the design house. Eau De Cologne is perfume diluted with water. Cologne is for evening wear. Application is similar to perfume, behind the ear, the elbow, wrist, and behind the knee.
Eau de Toilette, or toilette water contains 5% to 10% fragrance and is very affordable. Dilution with water or alcohol is about 90% to 95%, depending on the design house. Eau De Toilette is a ”splash” scent for everyday wear. Aftershave, the most affordable of all fragrances, contains 2% to 5% perfume and is diluted 95% to 98%.
